Tips

What should I wear to my engagement session?

tips on what to wear to your engagement session

Are you unsure of what to wear to your engagement session? One huge tip that I like to give to my couples is to try on the outfits first! Whatever you wear, I would suggest to have a family member or friend take a picture of you in it first. If you are anything like me, you will care more about the way you look in the picture before you care about the best smiles. I’ve had people time and time again say they loved the photo but they didn’t like what they wore.

What to wear: You are welcome to wear 1-2 outfits. You could start your photo session wearing dressy clothes, and then change into more casual clothes (or vice versa). Most locations do not have a bathroom, so plan on changing in your car or bringing a blanket to change behind.

Tips on what to wear:

  • Choose comfortable clothes: If you’re not comfortable, it will be noticeable in the pictures. Choose clothes that will flatter and look best on you.

  • Wear something that compliments your personality: Make sure your clothes look like “you” and fits your style.

  • Coordinate your clothing with each other: Wear clothes that are the same level of “dressyness,” and wear similar shades that compliment each other.

  • Choose clothes to compliment your location and the time of year.

What NOT to wear:

  • Fluorescent Colors: Fluorescent colors (such as bright orange or red) tend to color cast on faces, necks and hair. When the shirt is so bright, it often also changes the color of the person standing next to them.

  • Big and bold graphic shirts, baseball hats, sunglasses.

  • Major changes with your hair and makeup: You want your engagement photos to reflect who you really are, and you want to be comfortable in your own skin.

If you are unsure what to wear, bring it all and I can help you decide!

Other tips:

-Please empty your pockets. You don’t want keys and phones to show through.

- Spit out your gum. It is hard to photoshop out gum showing through teeth.

- Please be on time! I want to make sure you get the best light for both of your outfits.

TOP FLOWER PHOTO LOCATIONS IN UTAH

Are you looking for beautiful flowers to be in your engagement or bridal/formal pictures? Here are my favorite Utah locations to go to and the best time of the year to shoot there.

Contact me to schedule a session at one of these beautiful spots!

Utah State Capitol Cherry Blossoms

At the Capitol, the blossoms are gorgeous and they usually are the first to bloom before anywhere else. The best time to shoot here is anywhere from the first to third week of April depending on the year. The best time to go is in the morning or on a weekday evening. The weekends will be very crowded.

orem & elk ridge Orchards

The last week of April to the first couple of weeks of May is best to get the blossoms in orchards. The peaches (pink blossoms) usually come first. Then the cherry (white blossoms) come next. I have a great local orchard in Orem that I love or one in Elk Ridge. I love shooting in orchards!

Tulip Festival, Thanksgiving Point

Thanksgiving point has their tulip festival in April and May. Ashton Gardens is beautiful and there are so many pretty spots here. Consider renting a golf cart to get around quicker. Also try to avoid weekends because of crowds. Go here to see their photography fees.

KyhV PEAK, Provo Canyon

This location is about a mile up Kyhv peak road. The yellow flowers bloom mid to late May. It has beautiful views of Provo canyon.

buffalo peak, provo canyon

One of my favorite spots to shoot. This location is stunning in the summer and fall whether there are flowers or not. There are yellow flowers that bloom in a big field about the 2nd or 3rd week of June. This location has a 10 minute bumpy dirt road that you have to drive on. There is also a 5-10 hike to get to the flower field.

LAVENDER FIELDS, MONA

The lavender fields at Young Living Farms in Mona are gorgeous! They bloom most of July. You have to reserve a time before you go. Each hour costs $75. I’d recommend scheduling a time in March to get one of the sunset times.

albion basin, little cottonwood canyon

This location is probably the most iconic wild flower spot in Utah. The flowers usually bloom at the end of July. The flowers are stunning! Since this spot is so popular, there are ropes to keep you on the trails. The rangers don’t want people to trample the flowers, so you must stay on the path. However, they have about 5-6 photo spots that put you right in the middle of the flowers. The best time to go is a weekday. And don’t forget your bug spray!

Location fee is $12 at the toll booth.

Red Butte Garden

Beautiful location with so many photo spots with all sorts of flowers all throughout Spring and Summer. Requires entry and photography fee. Check here for those prices.

Other flower location ideas:

Ensign Peak- yellow wildflowers

Guardsmans Pass- wildflowers

American Fork Amphitheater- Lilac Bushes

Lambert Park, Alpine- poppy field
